Mystery on the Desert - Nazca Lines

The sun is blazing here in Nazca but last night it was crisp. Nothing-day yesterday, walkabout the town, strolled through the market etc. This morning I flew over the Nazca Lines - these are large numbers of lines, not only parallel lines and geometrical figres, but also designs of a dog, birds, a spider and a tree.

This is what some profs/docs/experts think about the origins of the lines:
1. some sort of vast astronomical pre-Inca calender
2. tracks of running contests
3. represent weaving patterns and yarns and the plain is a map demonstrating the Tiahuanaco Empire - you what?
4. they conform to fertility practices throughout the Andes
5. worship of water and fertility
and the list goes on...

sounds to me like no-ones got a clue but it was quite amazing seeing these figures/designs carved into the Pampa Colorada sands.

Catching a nightbus to Arequipa at 2300 tonight.
