mama negra

I got to La Hesperia yesterday around 1300. The walk up the mountain was a killer and I was dripping. Met the only two other volunteers out there - Ali and Souzanne - and I was ready to do some work. No no no...they told me that they were going off to Latacunga for the weekend. I was not gonna stay at this place - total isolation - by myself so I decided to go with them. I was only at La Hesperia for 15mins when I found myself walking back down the mountain. Ýou are free to do whatever on weekends I was told...

We were meeting some other volunteers that had just finished last week for a festival - Mama Negra. So now theres 6 of us and we´re soaking up this festival atmosphere. The fireworks were crazy...sounding like bombs and bright and went on for ages...definatley wouldn´t have passed Health&Safety laws in England!! We found out that the main event was on the following day... The fireworks stopped and the party began! The locals were really friendly. We were all dancing to Grupo 7 on the main square - it was packed, must have been well over a 1000 people there. I was so gutted that the batteries in my camera died. This local lad, Miltong, decided to follow us everywhere..he was funny at first but then we ditched him. There were 6 year olds gambling at one of the stalls with 10cvts (about 5p) and they were doing alright too. Everyone was drinking this hot liquor made with something or other, loads and loads of sugar and cinamon. So many of the stalls in the square were booze-orientated and they were brewing this stuff all over the place. It was a good laugh.

Today we went to the old town to see the procession. It was more like carnival!! People doing their dance in costumes or playing their instruments or just looking weird...these people were all drinking too. The police got involved in the drinking and the general public weren´t shy either. Loads of people everywhere .. everyone was so happy and having a really good time.
Being in the sun all day was tiring so we decided to head back to the hostel get our stuff and go on to Quito. I just came from this place and now I´m sitting in the same spot as few days earlier - wasnt expecting this..

Anyway, we´re all going to see National vs Deportivo Quito tomorrow which I´m looking forward to. Then me Souzanne and Ali will have to head back to La Hesperia.

pics are coming out in random order..
